Is E-Commerce The Path to Freedom
Introduction: Who am I and Why?
You reading or listening to this book means you either are interested in ecommerce or interested in me. Great cause I’m going to talk about both. My name is Andre Johnson and I am a father to a beautiful daughter and a future husband to an amazing woman, my queen!
I grew up in Compton, California with my grandmother and not much to our name. I am a middle child of 8 kids in total. I wasn’t the smartest in school but it didn’t matter to me cause i just wanted to be cool anyway being smart at that time wasn’t the cool thing to do.
I started working pretty young got my first sales job at 14 doing door to door sales for newspaper such as the LA Times and Long Beach Press Telegram I worked that job until I was 19 years I thought I was going to retire a millionaire doing that job and boy was I wrong you see we were taught to sell the newspapers with a sympathetic approach people use to buy from me because I told them I was raising it for a school field trip or a college scholarship.
At that time I didn’t know what I was actually doing. I just remember being happy making 400 dollars a week at 14! But now imagine using that same sympathetic reason at 19, yeah it didn’t work people said things like get a real job or just didn’t open the door cause now I’m a 6’2 stranger knocking on their door,
So I end up leaving and when I left it was like being in a house for 5 years and going outside for the first time, I was tossed in a world I didn’t know anything about I tried college it didn’t work I tried 9-5 jobs and was never satisfied jumping back in forth to different sales jobs. Then I came across social media marketing and immediately fell in love with it. I was excited to go over marketing plans to increase people’s business engagement. But then my business started to stall and I was becoming unhappy i thought it was me I thought i had an issue with commitment but this couldn’t be true if I’ve been with the same woman for 10 years now,
Then I woke up and realized that I wanted more than just my own business but I actually was attracted to business because of the freedom and the endless opportunities. So I began my quest of dedicating myself to find what I could do that I would enjoy and love and give me the ability to have financial freedom and endless growth opportunities. You’ll be surprised by what I discovered.
Chapter 1: What is Freedom?
We were taught as children that the word freedom was associated with a fight whether it’s the American Revolutionary War, The Civil War, or just an artist trying to get out of a bad label deal. We automatically choose to fight when it comes to freedom. The dictionary definition of freedom is the power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint. If this is accurate then are we really free? I mean yes we can sleep whenever we want, eat whenever we want, and have the ability to spend our time how we choose, but do we really? Can we travel whenever we want ? Can we wake up and decide to do whatever we want without having any repercussions like losing money, risk of losing our jobs? I mean think about it, are we really free?
The author Ayn Rand said “Freedom is to ask nothing, to expect nothing, to depend on nothing”.
Franklin D Roosevelt said “In the truest sense freedom cannot be bestowed it must be achieved”.
Based on their view we should always be fighting for freedom until we don’t have to ask for anything, expect anything, or depend on anything. This means not waiting for a check to deposit, not asking for two weeks off so you can go on vacation, or fearing that you will lose everything because you want to take a few months off for yourself or family. If this is the true meaning of freedom then how do we accomplish it ? How do we make sure we don’t have to depend on any source but ourselves to provide for our lives? I have to warn you to keep reading and you will find out how and once you know how there is no going back.
Chapter 3: What is Commerce?
To understand e-commerce you must first understand commerce. Commerce is the activity of buying and selling, especially on a large scale. We participate in commerce on a daily basis whether it be buying a cup of coffee, getting a haircut, going shopping, pumping gas, buying groceries, or a pack of gum, I’m sure you get the point now.
Our lifestyle is built on commerce as a consumer and we don’t even think twice. But have you ever wondered who makes the product or came up with the idea and how did it even end up in your hand or shelves? You may have heard of stores like Target, Walmart, or Costco. Actually I am willing to bet you even shopped there before. These are some of the many examples of large-scale commerce. Since the beginning of commerce there have been countless people creating a product and selling it on the large-scale commerce some I’m sure you are a huge fan of. This could be your favorite shoes, favorite lipstick, or perfume or even your favorite snack.
We all consume products sold on the large-scale commerce created by people like you and I who started off with an idea. They were able to identify a problem and solve it with an idea that turned into an actual product and then successfully market the product to us, which we then decide if we approve of the product or not.
This formula has created thousands of millionaires and even billionaires but more importantly the ability to be financially free and putting them in position to ask nothing, to expect nothing, to depend on nothing. Getting where I’m going with this? I told you there’s no going back. The formula is equal opportunity for everyone. What ultimately will determine your success is your ability to always listen to the people. When I say the people, I mean your potential or existing customers.
Chapter 4: What is Ecommerce?
Now that you know what commerce is, I’m sure it’s clear at this point what ecommerce is. Ecommerce is exactly what commerce is but only conducted digitally, it is commercial transactions conducted electronically on the internet.
The reason this is such a big deal is because of how our everyday living is becoming more and more digital, we are ordering food from anywhere now thru apps like uber eats, doordash and more. We shop on sites like amazon, eBay, Esty, Alibaba and more. These are the digital versions of Walmart, Target, and Costco, although these stores now have ecommerce platforms, the majority of their sales come from in person store visits.
Just like how ecommerce has made it where you can shop and purchase and get it shipped right to your door all from sitting on your couch it has also made finding a problem creating a solution and creating a product that easy as well. See you could use Amazon to see what products are best sellers, read the reviews if there is a common problem you can find a solution and then go to Alibaba get your solution product created and then sell on Amazon, Ebay, Etsy, or create a website and use social media to raise awareness to your product.
Take Michael Dubin for example. Michael found a problem in the shaving community and created a solution called Dollar Shave Club offering razors directly to your door starting at just a dollar after ten years of rollercoasting and scaling the business Dollar Shave Club was acquired for $1 billion dollars by Unilever now Michael has created an opportunity to ask nothing, expect nothing, depend on nothing. He started off as a regular guy who saw an opportunity in a problem he was facing himself and created financial freedom. If I haven’t made myself clear this is huge for everyone, the biggest opportunity since the beginning of commerce. You can now take the same formula and create it from the ground up from your couch and have an opportunity to become financially free and to ask nothing, to expect nothing, to depend on nothing.
Writers Closing Message:
In 2020 the whole world was impacted by something out of our control that led to job loss, business closures and multiple deaths. The impact from the pandemic led to more people staying home and not choosing to shop in retail stores. This did increase the ecommerce market tremendously and is on pace to be at $11trillion dollars in sales by the end 2022 and expected to grow even faster over the next few years. At the time I am writing this we are on the brink of a recession and the scarcity of not knowing where our future is headed has created so much fear.
This reason I’m sharing this information with you is because I truly believe for everyone who chose to pursue true freedom means to ask nothing, to expect nothing, to depend on nothing. It would instantly make the world a better place and create less scarcity as you would truly be in control of your destiny. There are things that are out of control but deciding to not pursue something we know can be greater for us is in your control:
